Reception

In the Reception Year, maths sessions are introduced to maths using the Mastering number programme as a basis for developing place value and number knowledge. Other mathematical concepts are then developed through continuous provision. The main focus is developing children’s understanding of numbers and subitising skills.

Subitising is being able to visually see a number of objects instantly without needing to count them out one at a time and is key to being a fluent, strong mathematician.

To learn more about subitising and how you can support your child at home, please follow the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zsjbcmn

One Minute Maths is a free game your child can play at home to develop their subitising and number skills: https://whiteroseeducation.com/1-minute-maths

Please find below details of how we teach the children to add, subtract and multiply in Reception Year.
