Religious Education (RE)

At Thorpe Primary School we believe that Religious Education plays an important part in developing our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural growth.

As part of our RE curriculum pupils are encouraged to explore religions, engage with their knowledge, and reflect on their learning and their lives. Through the teaching of RE our children develop religious literacy (religious literacy is the knowledge of, and the ability to understand, religion, beliefs, practices, spiritual insights and secular world views. It plays an important part in preparing pupils for life in modern Britain).

RE offers our children the opportunity to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions and world views represented in the United Kingdom. It develops an understanding of the influences of the beliefs, values and traditions on individuals, communities, societies and cultures.

As well as developing factual knowledge of a variety of religions, RE promotes attitudes of respect towards other people who hold views and beliefs different from their own. We aspire to help pupils develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious issues, with reference to the principle religions and world views represented locally and in the United Kingdom.
